Weekend Food Choices Week 48: Meet Our New Accomplice
Hubby has just about had it up to here with my nagging him to take my food photos with his SLR because i get so jealous with all the nice macro shots my foodie gurus produce! So short of getting me a DSLR which he will eventually just end up carrying on our dinner trips, he got me a Sony NEX-3

Indulge me for a moment as i tell you about my new gadget…
The Sony NEX series boasts of an ultra compact unit with the capability of interchangeable lens.
The display is also movable so that i can get those food angles without having to stoop or hunch over.
Now why does the NEX take better pictures than the average compact camera….
In my naivety, i thought that a unit with a higher pixel count would automatically produce better photos…apparently not.
Hubby explained that if your camera has a high pixel count but a small sensor then it could potentially produce more “noise”.
Look at it this way, a small sensor has less capability to acquire light so that to produce the same exposure (as compared to a bigger sensor with the same pixel count) the small sensor’s signal would need to be amplified creating the so called noise.
Confused yet?!
Well, the average compact camera has a sensor which is much smaller compared to a 35mm full frame sensor. A DSLR can either have a full frame or APS-C sized sensor. To put it simply, the NEX features the same sized sensor as most entry level to semi-pro DSLRs (minus the bulk!).
I was happy with the photos taken with NEX 3’s 16mm f2.8 kit lens
…until we changed to a Nikkor 55mm micro lens
The macro shot is so sharp you could see the fibers in the table napkin! Nice!
The macro lens that we used is more than 30 years old which unfortunately we just borrowed from hubby’s good friend JM.
I was so happy with the shots i got!
I realized that using a manual focus lens is so much better because you don’t have to rely on the auto focus which most of the time just doesn’t get what i want
I love the fact that even in mixed lighting i could get such good photos without an off-camera flash
It’s just so tedious to change from the kit to macro lens
but with shots like these, i don’t think i would mind too much!

Congrats on your new gadget! I’ve been meaning to buy lenses for my LX3. Your shots look like as if they were taken by a pro! I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new partner in crime! 🙂
I. Am. So. Jealous.
Seriously, I want one now! I’m currently using a Canon Powershot A590 point-and-shoot. It’s perfectly fine but I literally have to take a gazillion shots just to get a single decent picture. Biggest issues for me are lighting (meaning I’d like to have a camera that can handle low light situations) and macro shots. The ones you took here are gorgeous!! And the NEX3 looks just as portable as a P&S. Sigh. Have to start saving up…

They are right Doc. The pictures are pretty good. The food look more delicious .
