Cooling Off with a Treat

the last two days have been ultra hot! after i thought that the heat wave had come and gone a couple of months ago, yesterday happened…36 degrees!  just standing still made beads of sweat form on my forehead arrghh!

what better way to cool off on a sizzling day but to grab a frozen yogurt cooler!

ive always loved yogurt in its traditional form (plain, in a tub, and cooled in the fridge) and when frozen yogurt became a popular dessert, i followed the hype to my delight!

Red Mango is one of the last frozen yogurt brands i haven’t tested and the heat which began last Sunday propelled us to the Red Mango store in Eastwood Mall that day.

despite the lure of all the yummy looking toppings, i ordered a plain jane, the green tea yogurt smoothie. i liked the organic taste but hubby gave his official statement “lasang dahon!” (it tastes like leaves). but dont be fooled by the anti-veggie’s verdict.   its gooood and cold, enough to give me a brain freeze!

…obviously, it was too good to wait for a photo shoot!

As i was browsing through japanese food reviews of manila, i realized that ive never eaten in half of the restaurants described as the best japanese places in town (and i call myself a japanese food enthusiast!). So when i was asked where i wanted to eat last night i said i would put my trust in the chef (omakase)

There are actually 3 branches of omakase, 1 in tomas morato, another in alabang and the 3rd in eastwood. Being pasig dwellers we headed to the intrepid building right across the accropolis gate on e rodriguez.

Frankly the place didnt look like my kind of good eats, the parking outside was crowded & flanked by a lot of pedestrians lining up for the 207M lotto and those trying to get on a commuter jeep. Luckily the guard pointed us to basement parking spaces right after ministop where you could enter the building avoiding the crowd.

Omakase is situated at the 2nd floor and upon entering, i knew we would not be getting fastfood versions of japanese food. Oh joy!

we started with the JCS maki platter

this is named so because it contains the jurassic maki, the seabreeze maki and the crazy maki.

of course i had to order their sukiyaki

they wonderfully brought the bowl of my favorite soup with the egg still intact and that made me happy. some japanese restaurants would serve it with the egg already in the bowl and thus the egg would already have been cooked. something i dont like. the soup however was not the best ive had. it could have been better.

for the main course i had ordered the tofu steak

this was delicious! the steak rolled around the soft tofu was thin and tender.

hubby ordered tempura

and my father in law ordered rib eye

any meal would not be complete without dessert so we had scoops of ice cream to top off dinner

overall, omakase is a place you’d want to go to if love maki and want good japanese food thats affordable but not run of the mill.
